Sustainability

Crate's journey towards sustainability started long before we opened our doors. Driven by a desire to reduce waste and make the most out of scarce resources, we got creative with our bar and invited the Hackney Wick community to help us upcycle waste into beautiful furniture. Today this upcycled, paired back interior is an iconic part of our brand's aesthetic.

We take a holistic approach to sustainability, considering the impact of every decision we make as a business on the environment and our community. That's why we formed an internal sustainability drive group, which works across departments to create policies and act as a green lens for all decision-making.

In 2019, Crate partnered with Doug McMaster to open Silo London, the world's first zero-waste restaurant. Doug's expertise has been instrumental in helping us close the loop on many parts of our operation, and he is now a driving force of change within our company.

Since 2020, Crate beers have been brewed by our partners at Purity using one of the world's most advanced, efficient, and sustainable brew kits. This system uses heat exchange and steam recapture technology to reduce energy and water usage by 65%, making environmental consciousness central to our operation. We package our beer exclusively in returnable kegs and cans, with aluminum being the easiest material to recycle.

At Crate, we're committed to reducing our impact on the environment in every way possible. That's why we serve our pizzas on 100% biodegradable seaweed sheets produced by our neighbors at Notpla, recent winners of the Earthshot Prize. We're inspired by their innovative products and delighted to work with them.

While we still have a long way to go, we're proud of our sustainable journey so far. With influential partners and a strong desire to do better, we're well on our way towards a more sustainable future.
